Quote:Could this situation prompt a trade? It might prompt a trade if Backe can prove he's healthy. I think the Astros will want to see how Backe pitches in a couple of games before really relying on...

Re: Who should be the Astros 5th starter after #22 returns?

Remember that the Astros most assuredly won't have Clemens in 2007, there's a chance that they won't have Pettitte either. If Backe suffers a setback in his comeback he might require surgery that would...

Quote:So it might just be that Wandy Rodriguez will be the 5th starter by default ?While I'm sure Backe will get a rotation slot when he returns, I don't really think he deserves one. He's not a...

Re: Who should be the Astros 5th starter after #22 returns?

Well Nieve pitched pretty well yesterday. Only 5 2/3 innings, but only two runs given up. He probably would have stayed in a little longer if the Stros weren't trailing at the time. Will be interesting...

Quote:I don't know how ERA+ is calculated, but if it puts Backe in the same category as Munro and Lima, it's useless. It normalizes ERA to park and league averages. 100 is average, above is better,...

Nieve should get the last spot until/if Backe is able to come back effectively. Whoever loses out should go back to round rock and keep starting.

Why isn't Rodriguez in this discussion? Is it simply because he is left handed? Other than his win-loss record, one could argue that he has performed at the same level as Nieve or Buchholz. In the...

Wandy has NOT performed at the same level as Buchholz and Nieve. That's ridiculous. I think Nieve going to the bullpen works except he pitched better then Buchholz and deserves to continue starting....

Re: Who should be the Astros 5th starter after #22 returns?

I'll agree that the Buchholz-Wandy claim is a bit of a stretch on current stats, but Nieve's RA is 4.84 vs. Wandy's 5.42. Wandy has a pretty high walk rate and has barely thrown more strikes than...
